Hypnobirthing Case Study: Nancy's Story

Nancy discovered hypnobirthing about half way into her first pregnancy, after dealing with anxiety issues around birthing.
She is a thirty-something mama of two happy and healthy children.
With hypnosis, Nancy was able to address those feelings, change them to 100% confidence and reap other benefits she hadnʼt thought possible.
Here’s her story…
Anxious About Birth Pain And Medication
Initially, Nancy had no idea about birth.
Though she was calm for the first half of her first pregnancy, at about 20 weeks or so that she began to feel anxious.
She thought, “This child has to come out one way or another!”
She read a book called Easy Labor which offered unbiased information about birthing choices.
That is the first time she ever heard about using hypnosis for birth.
The sections on epidurals and pain relief medications made her uncomfortable at a subconscious level, though she couldn’t tell you why. She had only ever been exposed to birth in hospitals with epidurals. She never knew anyone who had a natural birth.
She felt anxious about the idea of an epidural catheter being placed into her back.
She had only ever known birth to be painful.
No one had ever told her birth could be easy and comfortable without the help of pain medication.
Nancy also describes her confidence level at a zero before starting her hypnobirthing practice.
Skeptical About Hypnobirthing's Effectiveness
She was skeptical at first.
Like many people, she did not know that she would be in complete control during hypnosis.
She didn’t know that her subconscious mind would only accept suggestions that work for her. She was not sure at all whether it would actually work. But she was intrigued and thought there was certainly nothing to lose by trying.
Hypnosis seemed so gentle.
What she learned about hypnosis for birth was just that: I could have a wonderful birth using no medical interventions, with just the use of her mind.
Immediate Results During Pregnancy!
Nancy felt immediately relaxed as she listened to her hypnosis tracks.
She usually listened at bedtime.
She found herself sleeping so much better.
She also developed an immediate confidence in herself and her ability to grow and birth a healthy baby. The affirmations recordings also boosted her confidence almost instantly, even though she was unable to listen to them every day.
Nancy listened to her hypnosis tracks everyday, exactly as recommended.
“I loved it! It was a little gift to me and my baby.”
The hypnobirthing tracks provided a special space for her to connect with her baby, especially during her second pregnancy. With a toddler running around, Nancy didn’t have a chance to really connect regularly with her growing baby, so using the tracks and practicing really helped her to spend focused time to do so.
Nancy’s husband was very supportive of her practice and use of hypnosis.
Her sister also attended both of her births and read scripts aloud. Both Nancy’s husband’s and sister’s involvement created a very calming energy for her.
Finally, Nancy really liked that the hypnosis program was a home study, for two reasons.
- First, she loved convenience of being able to practice at home and on her own schedule.
- Second, the price was right, and she got a real bargain since she used the course twice for the same price. Nancy’s first birth was in the hospital.
Calm, Confident and Comfortable Births
Amazingly, though her confidence level had been a zero, Nancy describes herself during her son’s birth as calm, happy and confident.
Though in a state of hypnosis, Nancy was laughing, chatting and making jokes in between birthing waves. That is, she was much like she is normally – loving and laughing and joking around.
While she was confident with her first birth, she was even more so with my second.
Nancy says,
“In my second birth, I had a completely pain-free
experience. I felt waves as intense pressure, but that was it.
It was also a much shorter time, and the baby was born without
any pushing effort on my part.”
Nancy was 100% confident and in complete control the entire time while birthing her daughter. She was actually excited when her contractions began.
Although Nancy was skeptical at first about hypnobirthing, in just a few short years, she learned quite a bit about the positive impact hypnosis can have on a person’s life.
She used it daily to affect truly positive changes.
“In fact,” says Nancy, “I am now training to become a hypnotherapist! THAT is how amazing my birth experiences with hypnosis were!”

"Awesome!!
If we can transform womankind’s experience of pain in birth, fear would no longer be the primary motivator of our collective birth choices and we could finally create a culture of trusting birth and gently bringing our babes into the world!! Thanks for doing this!!" Sherry |
